ASTON AA SOFTBALL STRUCTURE

Travel
1 Pee Wee (10U (10 & Under)) Team (B Division)
1 Midget (12U (12 & Under)) Team (B Division)
1 Midget (12U (12 & Under)) Team (C Division)
Intermediate (14U (14 & Under)) & Junior (16U) structures remain unchanged
NOTE
:  Your age group is determined using your age ON January 1st 2011.
Examples: If you are 12 on January 1st and turn 13 on January 2nd, you are considered "12U".
Conversely, if you are 12 on December 31st and turn 13 on January 1st, you are considered "14U".

Intramural

K/1 & 2/3
- no changes - cut offs for teams will continue to be based upon school grade level
4/5
CHANGING- this group is being changed from a school grade grouping to an age grouping
This will now be known as "12U Intramural" and will be adopting more of the travel rules to better prepare girls for the future - essentially raising the bar for the players, as well as the overall program.
Note:  Eligibility for this level will follow the date cutoffs described above.

Tryouts
It is imperative that you attend tryouts this year.  Start throwing a ball and even get to the batting cages ahead of time so that you come as prepared as you can.
Tryouts are scheduled for Saturday, March XX at the following times as noted on the website:
1:00 – 1:45 2nd / 3rd grade - new players only
2:00 – 2:45  14U Travel
3:00 - 4:30   10U & 12U Travel
4:31 – 6:00
  12U Intramural

Aside from drills geared toward basic skills assessment, there will be specific pitcher & catcher stations.  Those of you interested in those positions, come prepared to show your stuff! Trying out for these positions does not limit you to what you'll play on your respective teams, but rather gives the evaluators a good sense of whether or not these critical roles on the teams can be filled.

Team Selections
For the Pee Wee and Midget Teams there will be a "Selection Committee" made up of the Sun Valley Softball Coaches as well as a seasoned Tournament Softball Coaches.  This committee will serve as independent, unbiased and objective evaluators that will rank all of the players based upon what they see at try outs.

Girls that aren't selected for one of the travel teams will go into the intramural pool and be drafted by one of the teams to play there.  Given the changes planned for this program as well, this division will be more competitive as we align it more closely with the travel program.

T
he "Selection Committee" will be picking the Pee Wee and Midget travel teams.

Sincerely,
Aston AA Softball 2011

WOULD YOU LIKE TO COACH?

DO YOU NEED A RELEASE FORM?

If you played for another organization last year and still live in their area, you will need a release form from that organization to play at Aston AA.

If you live in Aston AA area and played for Aston AA last year and wish to play with another organization, you'll need a release form from Aston AA.  Contact the Softball Director for your release.

We STRONGLY recommend that players in Intramurals and above purchase and wear:
Sliding Shorts
- Also known as compression pants, they are worn under uniform pants or shorts.
Sliding Knee Pad(s)- Knee pads protect the knees and shins from scraps and bruises during play.
Mouth Guard- Protect the pearly whites during defensive play.

These items protect the player and give them the confidence to get down and dirty and play hard.

IF YOU CHOSE TO PURCHASE YOUR DAUGHTER HER OWN:

HELMET
-
NOCSAEIt must meet a few requirements:
It must fit properly, have a face mask and chin strap.
It must be NOCSAE approved. (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment)
The NOCSAE seal must appear on the helmet as well as the face mask.

BAT
-

Make sure you get a FASTPITCH bat.
Only Single Wall Aluminum bats in Del Val (Travel) play.
Have it properly fit for the player for length and weight.
We recommend you go light.  Light bats promote good bat speed and a proper swing!
Make sure it's legal for use!  go to:  www.softball.org/about/certified_equipment.asp
This really comes into play for travel and school ball.
Learn how to choose a bat HERE and HERE

SPIKES-
NO METAL SPIKES ARE ALLOWED!!!
Spikes should fit properly.  "All Turf" or standard spike is up to athlete. Some spikes are available with the spikes at the front set in a circular pattern to minimize knee injury due to spike lock.

GLOVE-
Should fit snuggly and be sized to the player.
As players gets older and settles into a few positions that she plays, the glove may be position specific, such as a catcher mitt, first baseman's glove, outfielders glove....
Learn how to choose a glove HERE

face gardFACE PROTECTOR( "D Mask")-
Optional safety device for defensive players. Protects against bad hops and line drives.
Good idea for "corner" players,(first & third) and very good idea for pitchers. See video at: E Mask Sales
